Anyone who is blocking homes needs to get out of the way” YP Gold Coast interviews Housing Minister
The Australian housing crisis; it’s the issue on the mind of all of Australia’s youth at the moment, and rightfully so. To top it all off, the Gold Coast has been deemed “Ground Zero” for the housing crisis, according to the Urban Developer.
Many people claim to know the reason behind the housing crisis with most saying it is due to a lack of supply during high demand. While this is correct to some degree, the truth is that there are several compounding issues that have led to the housing crisis. These include a high cost of building materials, overabundance of short-term accommodation (Airbnb), a slow development application process, lack of developable land and a high rate of interstate migration during COVID, to name a few.
An interesting issue that exacerbates the crisis even further is the high number of available investment dwellings that sit vacant.
These compounded issues mean that there is no single answer to the housing crisis. We need to solve each of these issues to create the housing necessary for the ever-expanding QLD population.
As an organisation, the YP is committed to understanding these issues and the mechanisms required to solve them. On Tuesday, we sat down with Meaghan Scanlon MP, the Queensland Minister for Housing, to discuss the existing issues and how the State is aiming to solve them.

He’s got one of the most expansive resumes we’ve seen from an entrepreneur to date. With seven businesses under his belt, could our next speaker be one of the Gold Coast’s busiest entrepreneurs?
Meet Sam Mangan. If you don’t recognise the name, you will absolutely be familiar with one of his brands. When he’s not building the Mangan Group of Companies out of our very own backyard, he’s known to frequent his international office spaces in LA and London, rubbing shoulders with household names – Dwayne “”The Rock”” Johnson anyone?
Sam is the Founder and Group CEO of the Mangan Group of Companies. In his role he is responsible for leading strategy and the day to day management of various investments and companies under the Group umbrella. These included Spin & Co, James Cosmetics, The Spin Studio Network, Emily Skye FIT, Archa and the Groups investment arm Mangan Projects.
Across the various businesses Sam has worked with brands such as Louis Vuitton, Disney, SKIMS, Gymshark, and international identities such as the Kardashian Family, One Direction and James Charles. Considered internationally as an expert in brand, crisis and communications, Sam splits his time between his base on the Gold Coast, Sydney and the United States.
This year, the Group will continue its growth with the launch of two new brands and more aggressive recruitment throughout Australia and the US.

INTRODUCING OUR FIRST SPEAKER.
With just over two weeks to go until the 7th annual Entrepreneurs Forum, presented by Bond University, we’re extremely excited to announce the first of our 2023 guest panelists.
Meet Nik Mirkovic, you may already recognise him (or a baby faced version at least) from an Entrepreneurs Forum back in 2017. Well, a lot can change in 5 years and we can’t wait to hear all about it.
Nik and his childhood friend Alex Tomic developed Hismile after they noticed a common theme around bad teeth whitening experiences. Now, nine years on, having been profiled by the likes of Forbes, AFR and Smart Company, Nik & Alex have placed a precedent on the importance of innovation and R&D. After increasing investment and focus on Research and Development, the smilecare disruptors continued to challenge the status quo of the oral care and whitening industries.
In April 2021, Hismile debuted the PAP+ range – an innovative formula that would change the face of teeth whitening as consumers knew it. Since then, Hismile has continued to create industry-disrupting products that have quickly reached cult-status and become among the fastest-selling beauty products globally. And all of this is happening right in our backyard at their Burleigh Heads HQ.
Since we heard from Nik, Hismile have scaled to new heights and worked with Kim Kardashian, Conor McGregor, Millie Bobby Brown, Victoria’s Secret models and more. But that’s all we see on the surface, we can’t wait to dig deeper at this year’s Entrepreneurs Forum.

You’re probably an ageing millennial. This week is Gold Coast Business Week. A week where all sectors that make up our thriving economy come together and reflect, learn and connect with their peers.
On Monday, the Mayor hosted the first event of the week – a spritely 7:30am breakfast meeting with keynote speaker Michael McQueen. We’ve all sat in these keynote pressos and wondered what we might take away. And anyone who promises to make them ‘fun’ usually hasn’t read the crowd. But in this instance Michael was surprising, giving everyone in the room a provocation or thought that has no doubt been replayed in our minds since.
One of key his points that directly spoke to our advocacy pillar is the notion of ‘A Healthy City’ with a particular nuance towards supporting emerging leaders – the Gen Zs and the ageing Millennials – yes, we’re shook too.
One thing that grabbed my attention was that Michael predicts that the ‘Post Millennial era’ is one of the key changes in business over the next 10 years. It’s fair to reflect that when this generation was first raised in the room there was a sense of collective eyerolling and almost distain for this cohort.
But what was particularly interesting from Michael’s presentation was some of preferences of this generation that took us by surprise.
Let’s give the context that this is the first truly digital native generation. They are leading us into a growing digital world and the evolution of the Metaverse is a concept that many of us are probably still grabbling with.
So, it was a surprise, but perhaps a humble relief, that this generation is still craving human connection in the workplace. Recent research suggests that almost 50% of Gen Z and Millennials are looking to be 100% office based. On the other end of the generation spectrum, the Boomers are more likely to be seeking a hybrid arrangement. Surprised? I was.
And so, whatever our expectation is of this emerging workforce, it is that they are surprising and perhaps more conventional than what we might initially have anticipated. At least in terms of their working environment preferences.
What does that mean for the businesses that have flipped to being entirely remote? What about the current leaders, the Boomers, who would most prefer hybrid arrangements and how is that at conflict with the generation it is leading who are craving more interaction and sense of connectedness.
Here are our top key takeaways and provocations:
Important factors for this generation are environmental policies, equity and diversity. Employers ignore this at your peril.
Messaging platforms, such as Slack, iMessenger, WhatsApp are more important to this generation than email. Will this be the generation that finally fixes our forever-filling inboxes?
